My Friends,

People are walking off cliffs while texting (true story). Cars drive themselves. Airplanes fly themselves. Artificial Intelligence even writes our students’ theses. Do these modern advances really improve our lives?

Whatever happened to James Dean looking cool in his manual sports car? The romance of flying across the Pacific on a Pan Am Clipper? Navigating the Amazon with only a canteen and compass? Exploring the Valley of the Kings with shovel in hand?

Humanity is trading its sense of adventure and beauty, replacing it with technology.  I’m not against technology.  It certainly has its place in society, and will continue to provide extraordinary advancements — it will cure disease, feed the hungry, and solve great challenges. But we must also ask: What is the point of living if we become robots trudging through time, controlled and influenced until the end?

Now, I’m typing this on an iPad (cool tech), but these words were first written by hand with my Sky Blue Highlander Rollerball Pen.

We live in a world of distractions — apps monetizing your attention, video games consuming hours, news designed to shock and sell. There is a constant battle for your mind, your time, and ultimately your checkbook.
